Hwange Local Board Cracks Down on Littering, Declares May “Month of Cleanliness”

The Hwange Local Board (HLB) is taking a zero-tolerance approach to littering and illegal dumping, designating May as its “Month of Cleanliness.”
HLB Chairperson Councillor Morrison Mafa expressed alarm at the growing problem, calling for community-wide action.
“The amount of littering is simply unacceptable, certain areas have become eyesores due to illegal dumping. We urge residents to abandon this irresponsible behavior,” said Mafa.
Mafa highlighted the dangers of littering from vehicles, noting the roadside debris and potential traffic hazards it creates.
“The litter by the roadsides is a clear sign people are throwing trash from moving vehicles, this not only pollutes our environment but can also lead to accidents,” he said.
He further condemned the growing disregard for proper waste disposal adding that lpittering harms the environment, wildlife, and the economy. Mafa explained that land pollution also creates a negative impact on the neighborhoods, property values, and the environment’s beauty.
Mafa also happily highlighted that the local authority if not alone in the fight against littering,
“We’re encouraged by the number of organizations already supporting our anti-littering efforts, he HLB is prepared to enforce its Solid Waste Management By-Law, imposing stricter penalties on those caught dumping illegally,” Mafa said.
The Greater Hwange Residents Association Coordinator, Fidelis Chima weighed in on the issue of management by-laws, also urging large companies in the coal mining town to donate bins for waste disposal. “To effectively address littering, a collaborative approach is needed. HLB should develop waste management bylaws and policies alongside local communities and other stakeholders.
Additionally, contributions from large companies, such as bin donations from Delta Beverages for used plastic bottles, would be beneficial. Furthermore, incentivizing waste pickers could be a valuable strategy,” Chima said.
