In a heartfelt commemoration of the 52nd anniversary of the tragic Kamandama shaft mining disaster that claimed the lives of 427 workers, the Office of the MP for Whange Central Constituency has called for greater empathy from the Whange Colliery Company towards the affected families and former employees.
MP Daniel Molokele paid tribute to the victims of the disaster, acknowledging the pain and loss suffered by the community: “Today marks exactly 52 years since that tragic day… May their dear souls continue to rest in peace!”
Urging the new senior management of the Colliery Company to address social welfare issues affecting the surviving family members, especially the widows, Hon. Molokele emphasized the importance of empathy: “There is an urgent need for the company to come up with a viable and sustainable solution.”
Furthermore, the MP called upon the company to show sympathy and goodwill towards former employees who had their homes disconnected from the electricity supply, urging for constructive dialogue and mutual solutions: “The company needs to go back to the negotiation table with its former employees and come up with a mutual lasting solution.”
The plea for empathy and actions to support the affected families and former employees comes as a reminder of the ongoing impact of the mining disaster and the responsibility of the company to address the social welfare needs of those affected.
