Igniting Change: Tavonga Chiriga’s Journey with She Decides Feminist Academy

Tavonga Chiriga’s journey as an advocate for Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) began at the transformative She Decides Feminist Academy Boot Camp. There, she joined a diverse group of young Zimbabwean women and gained crucial knowledge on SRHR, advocacy, and leadership.
“The She Decides boot camp was not just about exchanging ideas,” Chiriga explained in an interview with Matabeleland Pulse. “It ignited a fire within all of us. We tackled critical subjects like SRHR, advocacy, and leadership.”
The academy’s impact went beyond education. “It was transformative,” Chiriga emphasized. “It recognized my potential and empowered me to use my voice.” This newfound confidence led to her invitation to the prestigious 2024 Zimbabwe Adolescents Health and Well-being Symposium in Harare, organized by My Age Zimbabwe.
While Chiriga already possessed leadership experience through ZINASU and the Women’s Institute for Leadership Development (WILD), the Harare symposium underscored the importance of lifelong learning.
“Being surrounded by knowledgeable people,” Chiriga reflected, “made me realize the importance of constantly learning and seeking guidance to refine my leadership skills and confidence. The She Decides boot camp planted the seeds, and the symposium provided fertile ground for them to flourish.”
Now, Chiriga is driven by a deep commitment to champion SRHR and gender equality in her community. “I want to mentor young girls, guiding them on their own journeys in leadership and advocacy,” she declared.
To achieve this goal, Chiriga emphasizes the need for ongoing support. This includes mentorship from experienced leaders, access to valuable resources and training, and a platform to share her experiences and become a powerful voice for SRHR and gender equality.
“I firmly believe that with the continued guidance of the She Decides Feminist Academy and a strong network,” Chiriga concluded, “I can make a lasting positive impact in my community and beyond.”
She Decides Zimbabwe is a movement composed of women led and serving civil society organisations, community leaders, policy makers, and youth networks, including my Age Zimbabwe. Their mission is to advance the fundamental rights of girls and women everywhere, ensuring their bodily autonomy, decision-making power, access to comprehensive sexuality education, and quality healthcare encompassing all aspects of their sexual and reproductive health. They also advocate for comprehensive sexuality education in Zimbabwe.
