A registered general nurse, Devine Dlodlo (26), has been arrested in Bulawayo on charges of unlawful termination of pregnancy. Dlodlo is alleged to have aided a 16-year-old student, Mary Nare, in terminating her six-month pregnancy.

The shocking incident came to light on July 6th when residents in Entumbane heard screams coming from Dlodlo’s residence. Upon investigating, they found Nare with blood stains and discovered a foetus in the bathroom. Nare later confessed to the police that she had approached Dlodlo, seeking medication to terminate her pregnancy. Dlodlo allegedly provided her with unknown tablets.

“We warn members of the public against this unruly behaviour of terminating pregnancy as it is illegal and they risk losing their lives,” said Inspector Ncube, the Provincial Police spokesperson. “Such behaviour from a professional nurse is uncalled for, and the law will take its course.”

This case highlights the dangers of backstreet abortions and underscores the importance of safe and legal options for women facing unplanned pregnancies. Nare’s ordeal is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of young women and the need for comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare services.
