In a pivotal mission aimed at reshaping migration policies in Southern Africa, H.E. Dr. Katharina Stasch, Chair of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Council, recently concluded a transformative visit to Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Her trip focused on enhancing support for migrants, promoting safe migration practices, and ensuring the rights and dignity of those affected by migration.
Dr. Stasch’s visit began with engaging returning migrants in Zimbabwe, where she emphasized the critical importance of reintegration support. Listening to the stories of women sharing their migration experiences and aspirations, she highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive livelihood initiatives.
At the Beitbridge Border Post, Dr. Stasch joined IOM and UNHCR officials to underscore the significance of inter-agency collaboration in promoting safe migration. This partnership aims to address the complexities of migration while ensuring that migrants’ rights are upheld.
Continuing her journey in South Africa, Dr. Stasch met with sex workers and community members in Musina, addressing the challenges faced by undocumented migrants in accessing essential services. Her visit to the Komatipoort Health Clinic revealed significant health concerns among migrants from Mozambique, including high rates of teenage pregnancy and barriers to obtaining birth certificates for children born in South Africa.
On her final day, Dr. Stasch toured the Migration Health Assessment Centre in Pretoria, engaging with refugees receiving vital health assessments. She participated in a focus group discussing prevention strategies for sexual exploitation and abuse, reinforcing the IOM’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations.
Throughout her visit, Dr. Stasch held meetings with key government officials, including Zimbabwe’s Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, and South Africa’s Deputy Director General for Global Governance. She reaffirmed Germany’s dedication to enhancing migration governance and fostering cooperative efforts among regional governments and organizations.
“IOM is dedicated to ensuring the dignity and rights of migrants while working closely with governments to develop policies that create safe, regular pathways for migration,” Dr. Stasch stated, reflecting on the importance of her mission.
In conclusion, the IOM and the German government remain committed to supporting sustainable development and improving the well-being of migrants and their communities in Zimbabwe and South Africa, aiming to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
