Lupane – In response to the challenges posed by climate change, particularly the shift in rainfall patterns, local leaders in Lupane West are promoting water harvesting as a critical strategy.

Honourable Mxolisi Charles Sibanda, the Member of Parliament for Lupane West, has called for a concerted effort between communities and government to focus on water harvesting. During a community meeting, Sibanda stated, “Water harvesting must be prioritized as a means of climate change mitigation. By capturing and storing rainwater, we can support irrigation, reduce dependence on unpredictable rain, and safeguard food security.”

The initiative’s urgency is underscored by the difficulties farmers face due to erratic rainfall. Former MP Martin Khumalo emphasized this point, saying, “Rain patterns have changed drastically due to climate change. Water harvesting offers a lifeline for farmers.”

In addition to agriculture, water harvesting is seen as a way to enhance community resilience, support local businesses, and decrease vulnerability to drought. Sibanda has advocated for investments in water storage infrastructure and training for farmers, calling for support from both governmental and non-governmental organizations.

With climate change threatening local livelihoods, leaders in Lupane West are actively promoting water harvesting as an essential strategy to secure the region’s future sustainability.
