In the early hours of a quiet Sunday morning, a horrific accident shattered the peace on Nketa Drive, near Chicken Corner in Bulawayo, claiming two lives and leaving ten wounded in a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding.

The serene morning of January 26, 2025, turned tragic when a 29-year-old driver from Gwabalanda lost control of his silver Honda Fit. Around 5:00 a.m., the vehicle, carrying three passengers, swerved off the road, crashing into 11 pedestrians. This incident has left the community in mourning and sparked a renewed call for road safety awareness.

Among the victims were Monica Tichava, 41, and Loraine Ruvarashe Shoko, 17, both from Nketa 6. Monica was pronounced dead at the scene, while Loraine succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to the hospital.

Inspector Msebele, Bulawayo Provincial Police Assistant Spokesperson, stated, “The cause of the accident was speeding combined with the driver’s failure to maintain control of the vehicle.” She added that the driver would be facing charges of culpable homicide due to this incident.

The aftermath saw the injured being treated at Mpilo Hospital, with the community rallying to support the victims. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

In response to this tragedy, Inspector Msebele issued a poignant appeal to both drivers and pedestrians. “We urge motorists to exercise caution and patience on the roads, strictly adhering to traffic regulations to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents,” he said. She also advised pedestrians to remain vigilant and highly visible when walking near traffic.

This accident not only highlights the critical need for speed enforcement but also serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly life can change. As the community of Bulawayo grapples with this loss, the focus turns to preventing future tragedies through better road safety practices.
