Dam spill in Lupane triggers urgent warning

Khumbulani Maphosa

Imagine a quiet afternoon shattered by the roar of water spilling over a dam, threatening homes and lives downstream. That’s the reality facing Lupane residents as the Bubi-Lupane Dam began overflowing on February 21, triggered by relentless rainfall in the Gwayi catchment area.

Now, authorities are sounding the alarm—urging communities to brace for potential flooding and stay vigilant.

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) confirmed the dam spill late Friday afternoon, sparking immediate concern for those living downstream. “Downstream communities are further warned to avoid crossing flooded rivers, closely monitoring the movement of children and livestock, as well as securing their irrigation equipment,” ZINWA’s notice declared. With water levels surging, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Lupane District Administrator Ennete Sithole, who chairs the District Civil Protection Unit (CPU), didn’t mince words. She emphasized the need for heightened awareness as the situation unfolds, calling on residents to stay informed and prepared. The rapid rise in the dam’s water levels, fueled by recent heavy rains, has turned a vital resource into a looming threat—prompting ZINWA to collaborate with disaster management teams to keep communities safe.

ZINWA is keeping a close eye on the dam, promising regular updates as the rainy season presses on. For now, the message is clear: don’t take chances with flooded rivers, and protect what matters most—your family, livestock, and property.

As Zimbabwe navigates this wet season, the partnership between ZINWA and local leaders will be crucial in averting disaster. Curious about how this could affect you? Stay tuned for updates.
