Meet AK Zoza: The rising star of Maskandi music

At just 20 years old, Awakhiwe Gumbo, known by his stage name AK Zoza — is carving out a name for himself in Zimbabwe’s vibrant Maskandi music scene. Born and raised in Bulawayo, Zoza’s musical journey began in childhood, nurtured by a deep passion for traditional sound and storytelling.
Last year marked a turning point in his career when he recorded his debut album with Cliff Jeans Studios. Since then, he’s been steadily building his brand, driven by determination to succeed in an industry where few young artists manage to break through.
But Zoza’s story is not just about talent. It’s about grit. To support himself in Zimbabwe’s tough economy, he works as a kombi conductor in the taxi industry, a reality he balances with late nights composing music, rehearsing, and promoting his work. Through it all, he remains focused on his dream: to become a voice for his generation.
“My aim is to create a safe space for young people, particularly those struggling with drug abuse,” Zoza explains. He sees music not just as art, but as a powerful tool for healing and change. His songs echo the struggles and hopes of Zimbabwean youth, blending traditional Maskandi rhythm with messages of resilience.
Zoza draws inspiration from South African Maskandi artist Khuthuza and dreams of collaborating with him one day. He also believes in community upliftment within the music industry, calling on established Zimbabwean artists to support rising talent instead of gatekeeping. “With my delicate rhythm, I aim to attract music promoters who can help expand my brand and reach a wider audience,” he says.
For now, Zoza remains grounded — yet focused on the future. His followers are steadily growing across social media, where fans connect with his authenticity and raw talent.
With his combination of determination, message-driven music, and authentic Maskandi roots, AK Zoza is poised to become a major force in Zimbabwean music and beyond.
