The Lubimbi irrigation project in Lupane West has been upgraded with a new solar-powered borehole, funded through a combination of community contributions and the Lupane West Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

This development aims to address water scarcity issues that have long challenged local farmers, potentially improving agricultural productivity and food security in the region. Thomas Nyoni, chairperson of the Lubimbi irrigation project, highlighted the collaborative effort behind the initiative, stating, “We came together as a community and contributed our own funds to drill the borehole. The CDF money enabled us to purchase the solar system, and I am incredibly grateful to MP Mxolisi Charles Sibanda for covering the installation costs.”

The Lubimbi ward has historically faced persistent water shortages, compounded by competing demands from livestock and brick-making activities.

Councilor Chrispen Munkuli emphasized the significance of the new borehole, saying, “The irrigation project has faced numerous obstacles due to water scarcity. This new borehole is a game-changer for us. It will not only support our farming but also help ensure food security for our families.”

MP Mxolisi Charles Sibanda commended the community’s unity, stating, “I want to thank everyone involved in this project for putting aside their political differences and working towards improving their livelihoods.”

He also addressed concerns about youth engagement, noting, “I have seen too many youths relying on drinking njengu instead of contributing to our community’s development. This attitude significantly hampers their ability to become productive assets.”

The solar-powered borehole is expected to provide a reliable water supply, enabling improved crop production and supporting local economic growth. The project reflects a collective effort involving the CDF, local leaders, and residents, demonstrating the potential for community-driven solutions to address local challenges. With the new borehole operational, the Lubimbi community anticipates increased agricultural output and enhanced food security, marking a step toward a more sustainable future.
