The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested 748 suspects in an ongoing operation targeting illegal firearms, misuse of toy guns, and unlawful possession of dangerous weapons.

The blitz, which began on 1 September 2025 under the code name “No to Illegal Firearms, Misuse of Toy Guns and Dangerous Weapons”, has seen police intensify checks on firearms licensing, renewals, and possession of prohibited weapons.

ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that any deviation from the regulations regarding firearms possession and certification is a chargeable offense under the Firearms Act (Chapter 10.09),” said Commissioner Nyathi

He urged members of the public to work with authorities by reporting suspicious activities. “Members of the public are implored to report any suspicious activities related to firearms on the National Complaints Desk number, 0242 703631, the WhatsApp number 0712 800 197, or at any nearest Police Station,” he said.

The operation comes amid growing concern over the use of unlicensed weapons and the misuse of toy guns in criminal activities across the country. The police have also encouraged licensed fire arm holders to comply with regulations by renewing certificates and updating records to avoid persecution.

The operation is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and reduce gun related violence in the country. With police emphasizing the importance of community co- operation in tackling these issues.
