As schools open tomorrow for the third term, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has appealed to parents, guardians, school authorities, and transport operators to prioritize the safety and security of learners.
In a statement issued yesterday, ZRP National spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi emphasized the importance of compliance with road safety regulations and vigilance against crime as pupils return to class.“The Police urges transport operators to ensure that their vehicles are certified fit before attempting to transport children to schools. Drivers should exercise caution, avoid speeding, and above all, motorists are implored to comply with all road rules and regulations to prevent road traffic accidents,” he said.
Commissioner Nyathi also cautioned against learners traveling at night, saying this exposes them to road accidents and other risks. “School authorities and transporters should ensure that buses and other forms of transport to be utilized for the movement of pupils are not overloaded at all costs,” he said.
School authorities were further encouraged to safeguard tuition fees and related payments by depositing them in banks rather than keeping large sums of cash at schools. “This precautionary measure will help minimize the risk of robbery and theft, as large sums of cash at school premises attract criminal attention,” he noted.
The police also urged parents and guardians to remain alert to possible criminal activities. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the parents to be vigilant and report suspicious criminal activities to the Police immediately,” the statement added.Members of the public are encouraged to report crimes on the National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631, via WhatsApp on 0712 800 197, or at the nearest police station.
