The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has issued an urgent warning to communities in and around Gwanda following heavy rains that have caused major dams in the Mzingwane Catchment to reach full capacity and begin spilling.
In a statement yesterday, ZINWA said Mtshabezi Dam is already spilling, while the Tuli River and Shashe River are experiencing high water levels and have overtopped their banks, increasing the risk of flooding for downstream communities.
“Following the incessant rains being experienced in the Mzingwane Catchment, major dams have filled up and are spilling,” the authority said.
ZINWA added that Insiza Dam is “almost full and expected to start spilling in the next few hours if the current rate of inflows is sustained.”Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to exercise extreme caution.
“Downstream communities are advised to be vigilant, not to attempt to cross flooded rivers, and to remain on high alert for possible flooding,” ZINWA warned.
The water authority also called on water users to take precautionary measures to protect infrastructure. “All water abstraction equipment along river channels should be removed or adequately secured,” the statement said.
ZINWA emphasized that it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve.
“We will keep stakeholders and communities informed of any new developments as they occur,” said the authority
