In a celebration of dedication and achievement, eight schools in Matabeleland North have been recognized for their outstanding academic performance, earning the coveted Secretary’s Bell Merit Award for 2021-2022.

The prestigious ceremony, held in Lupane, Zimbabwe, highlighted the remarkable strides made by educators, students, and parents in embracing the Heritage-Based Curriculum and overcoming challenges to achieve excellence.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MoPSE), brought together educators, students, and community leaders to honor the schools that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to academic success. Among the celebrated institutions were St. Paul’s Amandlethu High School, Hlangabeza High School, Megawatt Primary School, Kariyangwe Primary School, Magama Mission School, George Silundika ZIMFEP High School, and Kusile Government Primary School.

Moses Mhike, the Permanent Secretary for MoPSE, emphasized the significance of the awards during his address. “These awards are not just accolades; they represent the dedication of our educators and the resilience of our students,” he said. “Academic excellence is a collective effort, and we are proud to see our schools embracing the Heritage-Based Curriculum, which enriches our children’s understanding of their identity and cultural heritage.”

The Heritage-Based Curriculum, a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s educational framework, aims to integrate cultural values and traditions into the learning process. Schools like St. Paul’s Amandlethu High School have embraced this approach, achieving remarkable results. Sister Bridget Kokera, the school’s head, shared her pride in the collective effort behind their success. “It has been a hustle and hard work from parents, teachers, and learners. This award is a reflection of our determination and partnership,” she said.

Inyathi High School, another standout institution, has also made significant progress under the leadership of Nkululeko Zidla. Zidla highlighted the role of infrastructure in fostering academic success. “Our school has invested in modern facilities that enhance the learning experience. This award validates our efforts and encourages us to keep improving,” he stated.

The ceremony concluded with a call to action for all schools in the region to continue striving for excellence. Mhike urged educators and communities to work together, saying, “Let us ensure that our children receive the best education possible, rooted in our rich heritage.”

The Secretary’s Bell Merit Award not only celebrates academic achievement but also serves as a reminder of the power of collaboration and perseverance. For Matabeleland North, this recognition is a beacon of hope and a testament to the region’s commitment to nurturing future generations through education.
