The Ministry of Industry and Commerce in Zimbabwe has launched a nationwide crackdown on unfair business practices as part of its commitment to protect consumers and promote ethical trade under the Zimbabwe Industrial Reconstruction and Growth Plan (2024-2025).
The initiative conducted in collaboration with other government agencies targets businesses engaging in malpractices such as smuggling, selling counterfeit products, delivering underweight goods, imposing multi-tier pricing schemes, and using inadequate labelling.
According to a recent press release from the Ministry, authorities are conducting impromptu inspections to ensure compliance with the Consumer Protection Act (2019). The Act aims to safeguard consumers by enforcing fair and ethical business practices. “The Ministry of Industry and Commence in collaboration with other government agencies is leaving no stone unturned to combat business malpractice,” the statement read, emphasizing the government’s resolve to protect consumers and promote fair trade.
To date a total of 3,779 businesses have been inspected, with 419 finalised prosecutions and the issuance of 402 compliance notices. Additionally, 4 816 units of various substandard products have been seized.
“Awareness and enforcement campaigns continue in earnest throughout the provinces until all business entities comply with the law,” the Ministry stated, underscoring the importance of these measures in improving product quality and service delivery.
The ongoing efforts are part of the broader Zimbabwe Industrial Reconstruction and Growth Plan for 2024-2025, aimed at fostering sustainable industrial and commercial development. The Ministry encouraged the public to report any suspected violations to support the enforcement of the Consumer Protection Act.
“In case you encounter challenges kindly contact the Consumer Protection Commission toll free number on 0719 768 856, Trade measures department on 0772 118 720 or the consumer council of Zimbabwe on 0776 372 295. We are here to serve and promote inclusive transformational industrial and commercial growth, leaving no one and no place behind,” the Ministry declared, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive economic progress.
This proactive stance from Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce demonstrates a dedicated approach to upholding consumer rights and stimulating fair business practices, which could significantly enhance trust and quality standards in the country’s marketplace. The ongoing enforcement and educational campaigns represent pivotal steps toward “Moving the Economy up the Value Chains,” as highlighted in the Ministry’s communication.
