On January 18, 2025, at the Doves Funeral Services premises along J. Tongogara Street, a routine departure turned into a moment of high alert. A company driver noticed something amiss when he saw the company’s white Toyota Hiace ambulance, which was supposed to be stationary, moving into a side parking spot with its lights unexpectedly on.
Suspicion arose since all other Doves drivers were attending a funeral, and the keys to the ambulance were unaccounted for. The observant driver approached the vehicle, only to find an unknown man at the wheel. The man had already turned off the lights and locked himself inside the ambulance. Upon confrontation, he complied with the driver’s demand to open the door, revealing he was in possession of a key that did not belong to Doves.
The driver’s prompt action led to an immediate police report, resulting in the swift apprehension of Sean Ndlovu, aged 20, from Esikhoveni, Mawabeni, Esigodini. Thanks to the driver’s alertness, the ambulance was recovered before the suspect could drive it away.
Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele commended the driver’s vigilance, stating, “We urge members of the public to always be vigilant and to take care of their property.” This incident underscores the importance of community awareness and proactive security measures in safeguarding assets.
