BINGA-The BaTonga Cultural Festival, returning for its second year on September 26-29, 2024, is poised to be a captivating showcase of Tonga heritage and a catalyst for economic growth.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Binga, the festival will showcase the rich tapestry of Tonga culture through music, dance, exhibitions, and community engagement.

A highlight of the festival is its diverse musical lineup, featuring both local and international artists. At least 10 artists from Binga and several more from across Zimbabwe and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region will take the stage, including notable names like Isaac Moral and Delampuli express, Insimbi zeZhwane, and Teacher Lucky, a popular Zambian comedian known for his Tonga performances.

Beyond the music, the festival will offer a plethora of cultural experiences. Visitors can explore exhibitions showcasing Tonga artifacts, traditional attire, and various cultural practices. For local entrepreneurs, the festival presents a valuable business opportunity, with exhibition stands available at affordable rates.

The theme for the 2024 festival, “Celebrating Heritage and Unlocking Value Chains Through Tourism Opportunity for Communities,” underscores its dual focus on cultural preservation and economic development. By providing a platform for local businesses to showcase their products and services, the festival aims to contribute to the economic growth of the region.

The festival’s schedule is packed with exciting events. On September 26, visitors can explore the BaTonga Museum Arena and enjoy cultural dances like ngoma buntibe and chilimba at Binga Freedom Square. The official opening ceremony will take place on September 27, featuring a visit to the hot springs (Imbila) and a Tonga ceremony honoring the Maalila ancestral spirit. The festivities will continue on September 28-29 at Binga Sandy Beach, with entertainment, exhibitions, and a special boat cruise.

Local youth are particularly excited about the festival. Pedzisai Munenge, a young resident of Binga, expressed her enthusiasm: “I am happy that the festival is annual; it helps us as youths to know about our culture, and I have bought my ticket.”

David Mungombe, the Event Director, emphasized the spiritual significance of the festival. “As artists, we have a deep connection with the waters. Our rituals at the hot springs and beach are integral to our cultural identity,” he explained.

The BaTonga Cultural Festival is not merely an entertainment event; it is a spiritual revival that connects people with their culture and ancestors. Mr. Mungombe stressed the crucial role of youth in this endeavor: “We are doing this for them so that they can carry on our heritage. It’s essential for continuity.”

Despite operating on a limited budget, Mungombe envisions a festival that includes artists from Zambia and the Matabeleland region, underscoring the festival’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural exchange.

The BaTonga Cultural Festival 2024 is set to be a landmark event that celebrates and preserves the rich tapestry of Tonga culture while fostering community spirit and economic opportunities. It invites everyone, locals and visitors alike, to come together in appreciation of this vibrant heritage. As the festival approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be an unforgettable experience filled with music, dance, and cultural pride.
