Gossip often dismissed as harmless chatter has far-reaching consequences that can devastate relationships and communities.Nineteen-year-old Phetha Mpala, a rising literary talent, tackles this pervasive issue head-on in her debut Ndebele novel, Amakhosikazi Esinyeyo.
Launched on December 4, 2024, at the Seventh-Day Adventist Pelandaba Primary School, the book delves into societal moral decay while celebrating the resilience of African languages and storytelling.
Amakhosikazi Esinyeyo explores the destructive power of gossip, highlighting its impact on mental health and social harmony.
“We live in a world where gossip is often trivialized, despite its damaging consequences,”Mpala said during the launch.
Her work urges readers to embrace empathy and build harmonious communities while tackling broader issues such as gender-based violence, crime and strained family relationships.
The book launch was a lively event, themed around vintage aesthetics, and included performances of drama, poetry, and music by Mpala’s former high school friends. Teachers from Pelandaba Primary, Amhlophe High, and Premier High Schools praised Mpala’s commitment to preserving isiNdebele through her writing, noting her passion for literature from a young age.
Mpala’s journey to publication was fraught with challenges, from securing funding to navigating the publishing process remotely with Harare-based publishers.
“I feared that my intellectual property might be stolen since I had never met the publishers in person. Thankfully, my work was in good hands,” she recounted.
Despite these hurdles, Mpala’s determination, bolstered by her family’s unwavering support, brought her vision to life.
Speaking at the event, Mpala’s mother, Nkulumo Mpala, emphasized the importance of nurturing children’s talents.
“Parents should support their children’s career choices instead of imposing their own unfulfilled dreams. I am proud that Phetha is pursuing her God-given talent,” she said.
Her father, Cuthbert Mpala, echoed this sentiment, celebrating his daughter’s achievement as a milestone for youth and culture in Zimbabwe.
“She has put the Mpala name on a pedestal and serves as a positive example for young people,” he added.
Phetha Mpala’s debut novel, Amakhosikazi Esinyeyo, stands as a powerful call for introspection and change. It highlights the importance of fostering positive values while underscoring the critical role of parental support in nurturing young talent.
Available in bookstores across Bulawayo, the book is a must-read for anyone passionate about preserving culture and building stronger communities.
