Hwange Local Board cracks down on illegal brick moulding

HWANGE- In a bold move to protect its natural landscapes, the Hwange Local Board has taken decisive action against the long-standing issue of illegal clay poaching and unauthorized brick moulding.

This initiative marks a significant step towards environmental rehabilitation in the colliery town, which has suffered from land degradation for over 15 years.

Acting Town Secretary, Paulos Mabhureni, shared insights into the board’s strategy, stating, “We issued a warning to the illegal brick molders three months ago, emphasizing the severe environmental impact of their activities. The relentless poaching of clay soil has led to significant land degradation and soil erosion.”

The board’s efforts have escalated beyond warnings, with actions taken to confiscate tools and bricks, and to dismantle temporary shelters used by the illegal molders. Mabhureni noted, “We strive to remove these illegal operations to make way for a comprehensive rehabilitation program.” The financial burden of these enforcement actions is considerable, with costs exceeding USD 30 000 to date.

Looking forward, the Hwange Local Board has ambitious plans for the areas marred by illegal activities. “We are planning a large-scale reforestation project,” explained Mabhureni. “In addition to planting trees, we aim to introduce fish ponds for a fish farming program, which will not only help in restoring the land but also generate sustainable income for the local community.”

These initiatives reflect the board’s commitment to long-term, environmentally friendly development. “Our goal is to restore the area and ensure that future developments are sustainable,” Mabhureni added, underscoring the importance of community involvement in these projects.

This crackdown on illegal activities and the subsequent environmental restoration plans are set to revitalize Hwange’s natural beauty, fostering a healthier ecosystem and potentially setting a precedent for other communities facing similar challenges.
