Byo mourns as flash floods claim life of young child

In a somber reminder of the dangers posed by flash floods, three-year-old Sibusiso Methembe Moyo from New Lobengula, Bulawayo, lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters on Tuesday afternoon.

The young boy’s body was later found in a drainage near Luveve Road, opposite Josiah Primary School, following a relentless search.

The incident occurred when Sibusiso and his older brother sought shelter from a sudden rainstorm at a local tuckshop. Assuming the weather had cleared, they attempted to return home, but Sibusiso tragically fell into a drainage and was carried off by the current.A widespread search involving community members, police, and the fire brigade was launched but to no avail until the next morning.

In a press statement confirming the incident, Assistant Inspector Msebele stated, “We urge parents and guardians to always monitor children under their care and to warn them not to cross flooded streams and drainage but to wait for them to subside, especially during the rainy season.”

Mayor David Coltart shared his grief on X (Twitter) , saying, “I am deeply saddened by the report of a 3-year-old child being washed away yesterday afternoon by flood waters in Bulawayo.My sympathy is extended to the affected family.”

In response to this tragedy and the ongoing flood risks, the Bulawayo City Council has advised residents to steer clear of moving water, avoid traversing flooded areas, and ensure adequate drainage around their properties to prevent such heartbreaking events.

The Mayor also encouraged the community to consult the Flood Awareness pamphlet for guidance, emphasizing collective responsibility to avert future tragedies.
