In the first Cabinet session of the year held at State House on 11 February 2025, Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa outlined a plan for the year centred on economic revitalization and governance reform.
President Mnangagwa emphasized the importance of creating an environment that encourages both local and foreign investment.
“Efforts should be made to address all areas that impede investment, whether from within the country or abroad,” he noted.
His strategy for economic growth includes simplifying processes that have traditionally slowed down investors, with the aim of creating a more business-friendly environment in Zimbabwe.
On public sector governance, Mnangagwa highlighted the need for merit-based appointments,”The appointment of individuals to public sector boards should be based on merit, competence, and experience,” he stated
Regarding local governance, he directed councils to speed up budget approvals and improve service delivery,”Councils are required to meet the standards for budget approval and service delivery plans to increase efficiency and accountability. All pending budget approvals should be finalized by the end of the first quarter,” he stated, establishing a clear timeline for compliance.
Mnangagwa’s speech sets a tone of accountability and reform for the year, signalling his commitment to enhancing both the economy and administrative processes in Zimbabwe. The session marks the beginning of a potentially transformative period for the nation’s governance and economic framework.
