A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident on August 17, 2025, at approximately 7:15 PM. in Bulawayo along the 12th Avenue Extension at the intersection of Townsend Road. Police in Bulawayo are investigating and seeking the driver of a Toyota Fortuner who fled the scene after fatally striking the victim.

The incident began when a 33-year-old male driver from Matsheumhlope, operating a Honda Fit with two passengers, struck an unidentified male pedestrian crossing the road. The pedestrian, described as dark in complexion and dressed in black jeans, a red T-shirt, and grey slippers, was hit by the vehicle’s right side mirror and fell. The Honda Fit driver stopped to assist the pedestrian, who was struggling to stand, when a Toyota Fortuner traveling eastbound ran over the victim and continued without stopping. The pedestrian sustained fatal head injuries and died at the scene.

“The cause of the accident was due to speeding by the unknown driver of the Fortuner,” stated Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, Bulawayo Province Press and Public Relations Officer. “Charges of culpable homicide and failure to stop and render assistance will be preferred against the driver once arrested.”

Police are appealing for public assistance to identify both the victim and the Fortuner driver. “We invite anyone missing a relative matching the description to visit United Bulawayo Hospital or any police station,” Inspector Msebele said. “We also urge anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the accused to come forward.”

The ZRP emphasized the importance of road safety, urging drivers to maintain proper lookout and avoid fleeing accident scenes. “Such incidents can be prevented with responsible driving,” Inspector Msebele noted.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to locate the suspect and identify the deceased.
