Bulawayo Police Investigate Two Alleged Child Rape Cases

Police in Bulawayo are investigating two separate alleged sexual assault incidents involving girls aged nine and 14.

Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Msebele emphasised that both matters remain under investigation and that the named individuals are suspects until proven guilty in a court of law.

In the first case, which reportedly occurred on 26 December 2025 at Billars Farm, the suspect, Ngqobizitha Sibanda, allegedly entered the home of a 14‑year‑old girl under the pretext of inquiring about her grandmother and assaulted her.

According to Msebele, the girl did not disclose the incident to her mother until 25 February 2026, citing threats made by the suspect. The delay prompted a police report and subsequent investigation.

In the second matter, reported on 24 February 2026 in Cowdray Park, police allege that 25‑year‑old Mthulisi Mafu lured a nine‑year‑old girl to an unfinished room at her home and assaulted her.

The girl’s older sister interrupted the act, prompting the suspect to flee. Police later arrested Mafu after the incident was reported.

She appealed directly to caregivers to increase vigilance, saying:
“We urge parents and guardians to protect juveniles in any possible way to prevent such cases from happening.”

Data from Childline Zimbabwe shows the organisation received approximately 20 000 reports of child abuse in 2023, with about 15 % involving sexual abuse or early marriage. These figures were highlighted during parliamentary discussions in October 2025 on child protection legislation and service gaps.

While comprehensive national statistics for 2025 are not yet available, these verified figures reflect persistent challenges in safeguarding children and the importance of community reporting, prevention efforts, and protective services.
