The Zimbabwe Republic Police have launched an urgent public appeal to identify a man who died after falling from a 60-metre NetOne telecommunications tower in Richmond, in what authorities believe appears to be a case of suicide.
Despite nearly two weeks passing since the tragic incident on November 22, 2025, the deceased remains unidentified, prompting police to seek assistance from the community.
According to an official statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police on December 5, 2025, the incident unfolded at approximately 14:30 hours near the Richmond Shopping Centre. A 34-year-old Richmond resident witnessed the man climbing the towering NetOne telecommunications booster and immediately alerted authorities by reporting the matter to ZRP Sauerstown.
Emergency responders, including both police officers and fire brigade personnel from ZRP Sauerstown, rushed to the scene where they found the man still positioned at the top of the telecommunications booster.
The police statement details what happened next: “He then fell down to the ground and suffered multiple head injuries and a broken right leg. He died instantly.” Despite the rapid response from emergency services, the man fell from the approximately 60-metre-high structure before rescuers could intervene, resulting in catastrophic injuries that caused instant death upon impact.
Police have provided a detailed description to help with identification. The deceased is believed to be in his mid-thirties, with a slim build and dark complexion. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a black jacket, a black and white tracksuit, black shoes, and black socks. These distinctive clothing items, combined with his physical description, may help family members or community members recognize him.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police are urging anyone who may have information about the deceased’s identity to come forward immediately. This appeal is particularly directed at families with missing relatives, community members who may recognize the description, or anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information. Members of the public can assist by contacting ZRP Sauerstown directly with any information or by visiting United Bulawayo Hospitals for physical identification. Authorities emphasize that even seemingly small details could prove crucial in identifying the deceased and providing closure to his family.
The case is being handled by ZRP Sauerstown, with the police treating the incident as an apparent suicide. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the deceased’s identity and notify next of kin.
The NetOne telecommunications tower, standing approximately 60 metres high, is located in a prominent area near Richmond Shopping Centre, a well-known landmark in the Richmond suburb of Bulawayo.
The incident has shocked the Richmond community, highlighting concerns about mental health support and the accessibility of telecommunications infrastructure. Local residents have expressed their condolences and are cooperating with police efforts to identify the deceased. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues or having thoughts of self-harm, please reach out for help, as support services are available through local healthcare providers and community organizations.
This is a developing story, and the Zimbabwe Republic Police have indicated they will provide updates as the investigation progresses and if new information comes to light. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact authorities immediately, as the cooperation of the public could be instrumental in bringing closure to a family that may be searching for answers about their missing loved one. Contact can be made through ZRP Sauerstown Police Station or United Bulawayo Hospitals.
