Bulawayo mourns the loss of renowned historian Phathisa Nyathi

Bulawayo Mayor, Senator David Coltart, City Councillors, Town Clerk, Heads of department, staff, and residents have expressed their deepest condolences on the passing of renowned, Mr Phathisa Nyathi.

In a statement, the mayor described Mr Nyathi as an iconic leader, educationist, author researcher, columnist culturalist, and historian who had an extensive wealth of knowledge.

“Mr Phathisa Nyathi will be remembered for his research on the city’s history and his unwavering commitment and passion for the development of Bulawayo and the Matabeleland region and the country. Through the Amagugu Heritage Center, the My Beautiful Home- Comba Indlu Ngobuciko project, and numerous other projects, he championed for the preservation of culture, arts and the indigenous food systems,” reads the statement.

Mr Nyathi further enriched the community by publishing more than 50 books and through his insightful Sunday News column, where he shared his rich knowledge and wisdom of the Ndebele customs and traditions. Beyond his historical and cultural contributions, Nyathi served the City of Bulawayo as a Public Relations Officer from 2005 to 2008. During his tenure, he played a vital role in disseminating accurate information and fostering a positive image for the city.

Mr Nyathi will be granted a state assisted funeral on a date to be later announced by the family.
