In  rural Matabeleland North, a grassroots initiative is transforming the lives of young women. “Save the Girl Child,” an organization founded by Iphithule Ncube from Ward 10 in Lupane, is empowering young women aged 16 to 35 through hands-on training in cosmetology, soap making, and baking. Skills aimed at enhancing the economic prospects and financial independence of young women.

Provincial Coordinator Siphathokuhle Sibanda underscored the urgency of the organization’s mission. “We are committed to reducing the vulnerability of the girl child. By equipping them with practical skills, we foster self-reliance and build confidence,” she said.

The organization welcomes all female youths, regardless of their political affiliations, fostering an inclusive environment for empowerment. “Our mission transcends political boundaries we believe in uniting young women to create a better future for themselves and their communities,” Sibanda emphasized. This approach has helped cultivate a supportive environment where young women uplift each other.

The impact is visible. Young women who have participated in the trainings have reported increased self-esteem and the ability to contribute financially to their households. “Learning how to bake and make soap has not only provided me with skills but has also opened doors for me to start my own small business,” shared one participant, echoing the sentiments of many others whose lives have been  influenced by the initiative.

As the organization continues its work, it seeks to expand its reach and offer more comprehensive training programs. Sibanda concluded, “We are committed to empowering every girl child in Matabeleland North. Together, we can build a brighter and more sustainable future.”

With ongoing support and community involvement, “Save the Girl Child” is poised to make a lasting difference in the lives of many young women, paving the way for a more equitable society.
