ZUJ Calls for Ethical AI in Newsrooms on World Radio Day

‎Buhlebenkosi Nkomo

‎ The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) today joined broadcasters, journalists, and listeners worldwide in commemorating World Radio Day 2026, themed “Radio and Artificial Intelligence: AI is a Tool, Not a Voice.”

‎Radio remains one of Zimbabwe’s most trusted and accessible sources of information, reaching communities where other media cannot. It reflects local languages and lived realities, and provides a vital platform for public dialogue. From community stations to national broadcasters, radio continues to be a daily companion to millions of Zimbabweans.

‎“As newsrooms adopt new technologies, including artificial intelligence, ZUJ recognises the critical importance of responsible usage. While technology can improve reporting, it is vital to prioritise the human touch that keeps audiences engaged,” the union said.

‎ZUJ further highlighted radio’s role in fostering informed citizenship, social cohesion, and community engagement across Zimbabwe. “We encourage the use of AI to enhance local broadcasts without losing the human connection that makes radio so appealing. Protecting the space in which radio journalists operate freely and professionally is essential to preserving this heritage,” the statement said.

‎The union also recognised the benefits that AI brings to production, transcription, translation, and archiving. “Used responsibly, such innovations can improve efficiency and widen access to content,” the statement added.

‎Paying tribute to broadcasters and media workers, ZUJ reaffirmed its commitment to ethical journalism. “Even in a changing technological landscape, radio in Zimbabwe must remain guided by human insight and responsibility,” the union concluded.
