Binga Tourism: Government Outlines Plans to Expand Infrastructure

Government has outlined plans to expand tourism infrastructure in Binga District, with proposed developments along Lake Kariba expected to strengthen the area’s tourism potential and create opportunities for local communities.
Responding to questions in Parliament, Environment, Climate and Wildlife Minister Evelyn Ndlovu said the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) was spearheading infrastructure development at several tourism sites in Binga.
The sites include Sijailila Beach, Binga Sand Beach, Chikatata, Hot Springs, Chiteme Islands and Mtsuna Islands.
The planned developments are expected to support tourism activities such as boat cruising, sport fishing and commercial fishing, which Government said could contribute to local economic development.
Ndlovu said the initiatives form part of broader efforts to diversify tourism attractions beyond established destinations while promoting community participation in the sector.
She also highlighted the role of the recently established Muchemi Community Conservancy, saying it would enable surrounding communities to benefit from wildlife conservation through revenue-sharing arrangements, employment opportunities and income-generating projects.
In addition to tourism infrastructure, Government said the Kariba REDD+ Project is supporting community development initiatives in Binga, including conservation agriculture, beekeeping, schools, health facilities and the rehabilitation of 241 boreholes.
The borehole rehabilitation programme is expected to provide clean drinking water to more than 60 000 people.
Government said the interventions are aimed at improving livelihoods while promoting environmental conservation and sustainable tourism.
The parliamentary update places renewed focus on Binga’s potential as a tourism destination in Matabeleland North and the role of investment in infrastructure in ensuring communities benefit from the district’s natural resources.
