USAID announces $39 million in drought relief for Zimbabwe

The United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing an additional $39 million to help Zimbabwe weather its worst drought in years. This new funding comes as the lean season, when food insecurity typically peaks, approaches.

“The United States stands with the people of Zimbabwe as they face this devastating drought,” said U.S. Ambassador to Zimbabwe Pamela M. Tremont. “This additional USAID funding will provide critical food assistance, agricultural supplies, and clean water to hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans in need.”

El Niño weather patterns have caused a historic drought across southern Africa, including Zimbabwe. This has led to food shortages, disrupted agricultural production, and impacted livelihoods. Millions of Zimbabweans are facing hunger due to the drought.

USAID’s funding will provide food assistance to over 500,000 people, distribute agricultural supplies to affected households, and improve access to clean water. This builds on USAID’s nearly $62 million commitment to Zimbabwe’s humanitarian needs this year.

The United States is urging other donors to contribute to alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe.
