BULAWAYO — South African Maskandi star Khuzani Mpungose will headline his first-ever Bulawayo show this Saturday, 5 September, at the Bulawayo Athletic Club, as the city hosts the inaugural Maskandi Festive ft Izimbongi.

The event promises an evening of Maskandi music, storytelling, dance, poetry and cultural expression, bringing together performers and audiences around the genre’s distinctive sound and traditions.

Khuzani will be joined by Zwelihle Jele, Lerato Nqindi, and Umfanomsuthu, among other performers. Organisers say the program was curated to showcase both established and rising voices in Maskandi, giving fans a broader experience of the genre’s sound and energy.

Maskandi is a traditional South African music genre that originated in KwaZulu-Natal and is known for its guitar-driven melodies, poetic lyrics, and strong cultural roots. Over the years, it has grown beyond South Africa’s borders, gaining a following in Zimbabwe.

This will be Khuzani’s debut performance in Bulawayo, marking a milestone for cross-border cultural exchange between South Africa and Zimbabwe through music.

Event promoters say the show is aimed at celebrating music and unity across the region. The event will also support the proposed University of Matopo, with proceeds from the show earmarked towards the initiative, according to the event poster.

The Bulawayo Athletic Club stage will come alive with performances highlighting dance, praise singing, poetry, and the distinct Maskandi guitar style associated with the genre.
