BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE – In a heart-wrenching case that has sent shockwaves through Bulawayo, a 34-year-old woman, Happiness Chimbangu, has been accused of murdering her husband and two young children in a tragic act that unfolded overnight.
Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the gruesome incident, which began with Happiness expressing deep financial woes to her mother. “The accused had visited her mother’s residence on the morning of 29 January and expressed concerns about her husband’s inability to provide for the family,” Msebele stated. Later that day, Happiness returned visibly distressed, asking her mother to look after her children, revealing her intention to take her own life.
The night took a dire turn when, around 10:00 PM, Happiness’ husband, Edwin Chimbangu, called her mother, urging her to come to their home. Accompanied by two church members for support, they attempted to counsel Happiness, who confessed her suicidal thoughts. After what seemed like a resolution, the group left the residence at 12:01 AM on January 30.
Just two hours later, the peace was shattered when another church member, a neighbor, called Happiness’ mother to report that Happiness had arrived at his doorstep, confessing to having killed her family.
Police swiftly responded to the scene where they found the bodies of Edwin Chimbangu (35), and their children, Promise (4) and Prudence (7), all bearing severe stab wounds to the head, ear, and neck. The suspected murder weapon, a metal digger, was found near the door, stained with blood, alongside Happiness’ bloodstained blue dress.
The bodies were transported to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem examination.
In the wake of this tragedy, the police have issued a community alert, urging vigilance and support for those showing signs of mental distress. “We urge the community to be vigilant and protect those close to individuals with suicidal tendencies,” Inspector Msebele emphasized.
This case not only highlights the dire consequences of untreated mental health issues but also calls for a community and systemic response to prevent such tragedies. As the investigation continues, Bulawayo mourns the loss of a family torn apart by despair.
