Bulawayo issues alert over suspected HFMD cases

Staff Reporter
The City of Bulawayo has issued a public health alert following reports of suspected cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in the community.
In a statement from the Office of the Town Clerk, the city advised residents and stakeholders to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to curb the possible spread of the viral illness. HFMD is a highly contagious infection that commonly affects children under the age of five, though adults can also contract it through close contact with infected individuals.
HFMD spreads through saliva, mucus, or fluid from blisters and usually presents symptoms 3 to 6 days after exposure.
Symptoms to Watch For
Painful sores in the mouth
Rash or blisters on hands and feet
Fever and sore throat
Tiredness and loss of appetite
Prevention Measures
Residents are urged to:
Wash hands frequently, especially after using the toilet or changing diapers
Clean and disinfect shared items and frequently touched surfaces
Avoid close contact (e.g., hugging or sharing utensils) with anyone showing symptoms
Keep children or adults with active symptoms isolated until they are fever-free and all blisters have healed
Dube encouraged residents to report any suspected cases to the nearest healthcare facility for early detection and control.
“Let us keep our community safe and healthy,” the statement emphasized.
The City of Bulawayo also reminded residents that maintaining hygiene and early medical reporting are key to preventing wider outbreaks.
