BULAWAYO – The City of Bulawayo has established a dedicated office to support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), a move aimed at strengthening one of the city’s largest sources of employment and economic activity.

The announcement was made during the 2026 MSMEs Winter Expo and the provincial commemoration of International MSMEs Day, held on Friday at the Small City Hall.

Speaking through Councillor Ntombizodwa Khumalo, who represented Bulawayo Mayor Councillor David Coltart, the city said the new office will operate under the Town Planning Department and focus on addressing the needs of the MSME sector.”As the City of Bulawayo, we also see your strategic importance, hence our decision to set up an office specifically dedicated to addressing the MSME sector under the Town Planning Department.”

The city said MSMEs play a critical role in economic development by creating jobs, promoting innovation and helping reduce poverty. According to figures presented at the event, Zimbabwe has about 3.4 million MSMEs, which contribute more than 60 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product and provide full-time employment to approximately 4.8 million people.

The mayor also highlighted the importance of integrating small businesses into the mainstream economy.

The local authority said it is finalising the construction of the Dugmore MSME Centre, which is expected to provide a one-stop service centre for entrepreneurs. It also indicated that the Nkulumane Traders’ Market is expected to become operational soon.

While acknowledging the sector’s contribution, the city expressed concern over illegal street vending, saying unregulated trading continues to create challenges for both local authorities and formal businesses.

The mayor urged traders to embrace orderly and lawful business practices that support sustainable urban development.

The MSMEs Winter Expo brought together entrepreneurs, government departments and development partners to showcase products, exchange ideas and explore opportunities for business growth under this year’s International MSMEs Day commemorations.
