Detective Constable killed in shootout while pursuing armed robbers in Bulawayo

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – March 7, 2025 – Tragedy struck the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) yesterday evening when Detective Constable Hove Cassandra, a 37-year-old officer stationed at CID Homicide Bulawayo, was fatally shot during a shootout with robbery suspects in the Pumula South area.
The incident occurred at around 8:00 PM on March 6, 2025, as a crack team from CID Homicide, including the now deceased, pursued suspects linked to a series of robberies.
According to police, the team encountered the suspects in the Harbek area of Pumula South, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Detective Constable Hove was struck by a bullet on the left breast during the shootout and sustained a fatal gunshot wound. She was rushed to Flex Clinic in New Lobengula, Bulawayo, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Officers from ZRP Magwegwe and CID Homicide attended the scene at Flex Clinic, where initial observations confirmed that the deceased was lying on a hospital bed, facing upwards, with a gunshot wound to the left breast. Her body was subsequently transported to Mpilo Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The case has been referred to CID Homicide under ZRP Magwegwe for further investigation. The police have vowed to intensify efforts to apprehend the suspects involved in the shootout and bring them to justice.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that there is no going back in the fight against armed robberies and other violent crimes in the country,” said the police in a statement.
Detective Constable Hove, a resident of Emakhandeni, Bulawayo, was described by colleagues as a dedicated and courageous officer who served with distinction. Her untimely death has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community and the city of Bulawayo.
As investigations continue, the Zimbabwe Republic Police have called on members of the public to assist with any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.
The nation mourns the loss of a brave officer, and her sacrifice serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
