A Nyabira man, Gift Jambaya (50), has appeared before the Chinhoyi Regional Court facing a charge of culpable homicide after his dogs allegedly mauled a 13-year-old girl to death.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the incident occurred on 30 September 2025 at St Mannocks Farm in Nyabira. It is alleged that Jambaya left his home without securing his six cross-breed dogs.

“As the now-deceased Caroline Chari and other pupils were walking home from school, the dogs chased and attacked them,” said the NPAZ. “While the other children managed to flee, the now-deceased was attacked and bitten by the dogs. A search party later recovered the deceased’s remains with multiple deep cuts and dog bites.”

Jambaya has been remanded in custody while awaiting the continuation of his bail hearing. The State is opposing bail.

In its statement, the NPAZ reminded the public of the legal obligations that come with dog ownership, saying:

“The NPAZ urges members of the public that letting dogs run loose is not merely a nuisance but it is a failure of the owner’s legal duty of care which is a criminal offense.”
