Churches, Mpopoma Residents Join City-Wide Sanitation Drive

BULAWAYO — Churches in Bulawayo, in partnership with Mpopoma residents, will on Friday, 4 September 2026, roll out a sanitation drive aimed at improving hygiene and promoting civic responsibility in the high-density suburb.

The initiative will bring together congregants, vendors and residents from 7am to collect litter, clear illegal dumpsites and raise awareness about environmental hygiene.

The mobilisation will cover seven designated routes in Mpopoma as community members work to improve the cleanliness of their neighbourhood.

Mpopoma, like other high-density suburbs in Bulawayo, has faced waste management challenges, with residents raising concerns about overflowing bins, littered streets and blocked drainage systems, particularly during the rainy season.

The drive comes within the broader context of Zimbabwe’s National Clean-Up Campaign, launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in December 2018 as part of efforts to achieve a clean, safe and litter-free Zimbabwe by 2030.

The national campaign is held on the first Friday of every month and brings together government, local authorities, businesses, schools and communities to collect waste and improve sanitation.

The Bulawayo City Council has repeatedly called on communities to take ownership of their surroundings and complement municipal efforts to keep the city clean.

Churches in Bulawayo have also increasingly participated in community service programmes, with the latest initiative seeking to bring faith groups and residents together around environmental cleanliness and public health.
