Zimbabwe’s National Assembly has commended the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for their efforts in cracking down on drug dealers, illicit alcohol brewers, and other criminals across the country.
Raising a point of national interest during the Thursday parliamentary session, Hon. Tendai Nyabani, MP for Rushinga highlighted the role of law enforcement in maintaining order and protecting citizens.
“It is disrespectful that some individuals are attacking police officers who are working tirelessly to maintain law and order,” he said. “Police officers should be respected because they are the backbone of our national security. If there is no police, we are not protected.”
The MP called for strict penalties against those who attack law enforcement officers, warning that such actions undermine the country’s dignity.
Zimbabwe has been grappling with a rising drug abuse crisis, particularly among youth, prompting the government to intensify operations against drug cartels. The ZRP has made several high-profile arrests in recent months, seizing illegal substances and shutting down illicit breweries.
Parliamentarians urged the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage to enhance resources for law enforcement, ensuring officers have the necessary support to combat crime effectively.
