Mangwe-In a vibrant display of tradition and leadership, Mangwe District celebrated the historic installation of Headman Phahlana, formerly Senzangakona Sibanda, on September 4, 2024. The ceremony, held at the Sibanda homestead in Matshongwani North, saw hundreds of residents from Wards 5 and 6 come together to mark this significant event in the Phahlana headmanship history.

The Phahlana headmanship, established in the early 20th century, has evolved significantly since Nganunu, the original headman, moved from Tshitshi to Mphoengs in 1950. Headman Phahlana now oversees a broad jurisdiction including Mphoengs, Bhulu, Mabuledi, Kheme, Sanzukwi, and Matshongwani.

Outgoing Acting Headman George Mandulo Sibanda, who served as interim headman, expressed pride in passing the leadership to his grandson. “We have had a long line of dedicated headmen, from Nganunu to Kefas Sibanda, and now Senzangakona,” Sibanda said.

Newly appointed Headman Senzangakona Sibanda, who has been in his role since 2019, returned from South Africa to assume this position. The installation ceremony was underscored by the presence of District Development Coordinator Mangwe, Madam R. Makhurane, who highlighted the role of headmen in local development. “A headman should collaborate closely with government agencies and local authorities to drive progress in their communities,” she emphasized.

Chief Tshitshi also attended, offering congratulations and advising Headman Phahlana on responsible leadership. He urged the new headman to avoid alcohol abuse and highlighted the critical role of the headman’s spouse in supporting his leadership.

The event was marked by lively performances from local youth dance groups and traditional Ndebele dances. Attendees included fellow headmen from neighboring villages, representatives from the Mangwe Rural District Council, and various government officials.

Headman Phahlana’s installation represents a new chapter for the Phahlana community, with expectations that he will continue the legacy of his predecessors and drive development within his jurisdiction.
