Hon. Mxolisi Sibanda, the Member of Parliament for Lupane West, recently held a Civic Education session in Menyezwa ward to discuss the proposed abolition of the death penalty in Zimbabwe.

The meeting, held alongside a community football tournament organized by Sibanda, aimed to encourage dialogue and unity.

During the session, Sibanda outlined the key aspects of the Death Penalty Bill currently before Parliament.

“This bill seeks to abolish the death penalty, which many view as an outdated form of punishment. It is crucial that we engage in discussions about such significant changes to our legal system,” he explained.

The villagers expressed mixed opinions on the bill. Some supported its abolition, while others favored keeping the death penalty.

“The death penalty is necessary for those who commit heinous crimes. It serves as a deterrent,” argued Nkosana Moyo, a local farmer.

In contrast, Thandiwe Khumalo, another villager, shared a different perspective.

“Abolishing the death penalty is a step towards a more humane society. We must consider rehabilitation instead of punishment,” she said.

Sibanda leveraged the football tournament to further promote community unity and discussion.

“Football is a unifying force; it brings people together regardless of their differences,” he noted.

He donated soccer kits to Menyezwa FC and Tunge FC, emphasizing the need to support local talent.

The event drew a large crowd, with many taking the opportunity to engage with Sibanda about the bill.

“We appreciate that our MP is discussing important issues with us.It shows he cares about our opinions,”said Sipho Dube, a local resident.

As the debate over the death penalty continues, the Menyezwa villagers remain divided, reflecting broader national sentiments about this issue.
