In a dramatic turn of events, police in Bulawayo arrested three suspects linked to a spate of armed robberies targeting motor vehicles in Bulawayo and Gwanda. The arrests followed a shootout with the suspects at their Luveve hideout, marking a major breakthrough in cases that have gripped the region since July.
The suspects, Moketsi Ndlovu (18), Respect Khumalo (22), and Onias Tembo (19), were tracked down after a police crack team received a tip-off on November 25. According to Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi, officers confronted the suspects, who opened fire, prompting a swift response that led to their disarmament and arrest.
Recovered from the scene was a 9mm FN pistol loaded with three live rounds, alongside eight spent cartridges. Police believe the trio is responsible for multiple robberies, including an October 1 case in Harrisville where a Toyota Fun Cargo was stolen after the suspects hired it under false pretenses
The gang is also implicated in a November 13 robbery at Reigate Township, where a Honda Fit, a cellphone, ZAR 500, and USD 15 were stolen. The most recent case involved a Ford Ranger taken on November 20 and later abandoned at a railway crossing in Gwanda.
“There is no going back in the fight against armed robberies,” Commissioner Nyathi said. “Our crack teams will ensure the law takes its course without fear or favour.”
Police are now appealing for public assistance to apprehend an outstanding suspect, 41-year-old Elvis Charakupa, whose last known address is 96/7878 Mpopoma. Citizens with information are urged to contact the nearest police station or reach out via phone at (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp at 0712 800 197.
This incident underscores the ongoing battle against rising armed crime in Zimbabwe, with authorities ramping up efforts to restore safety and security across the nation.
