Bulawayo – A 32-year-old man was arrested in Newton West after his drone unexpectedly flew into a lodge, sparking police intervention and raising concerns over airspace regulations.

On October 23, officers on guard duty at a local lodge observed a drone hovering near the entrance. Curious about the situation, they approached the security guard on duty for clarification. Moments later, Tendai Davy Makiwa arrived at the scene, claiming ownership of the drone and explaining its erratic flight path.

“I was just playing with the drone at home when it got caught in the wind,” Makiwa said, explaining his urgency to recover it. “I live right across the street and thought I could get it before it crashed.”

Makiwa, who purchased the KY drone online from China for $6 in 2023, used the remote to safely land the device. However, his actions prompted police to file a report, leading to his arrest for operating the drone without proper authorization.

The police have since issued a warning to the public about the legal requirements surrounding drone usage. “Members of the public must seek clearance from the Department of Civil Aviation before flying drones,” said Inspector Ncube, the press and public relations officer for Bulawayo Province. “Failure to do so can lead to serious legal repercussions.”

This incident highlights the growing challenges of drone regulation as more individuals engage with this technology. As the popularity of drones continues to rise, local authorities are emphasizing the importance of understanding and adhering to aviation laws.
