BULAWAYO-In a remarkable display of bravery, Shepherd Ncube, a vigilant member of Bulawayo’s neighbourhood watch, has been lauded for his role in thwarting a cattle rustling scheme and capturing a thief in the act.
On August 27, 2024, Ncube’s quick thinking and unyielding resolve led to the arrest of Bhekilizwe Nyathi, who was caught with five stolen cattle carcasses. This act of heroism has not only earned Ncube a substantial cash award but also widespread recognition from local authorities.
Ncube’s confrontation with the alleged cattle rustler unfolded dramatically when Nyathi, armed with an axe, tried to bribe him and then attacked him. Undeterred, Ncube clung to the back of Nyathi’s fleeing vehicle until local residents intervened, forcing the suspects to abandon their escape. Nyathi was later apprehended by the police.
The incident not only highlights Ncube’s bravery but also underscores the critical role of neighbourhood watch programs in enhancing community security. In recognition of his efforts, Ncube received a cash award totaling $735 USD, 5360 rands, Ecocash USD 207, and 270 ZiG, along with $50 worth of beef. Additionally, he was presented with a certificate of excellence by Commissioner Dr. Wiklef Makamache of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
Commissioner Makamache praised Ncube’s integrity and transparency, noting, “I am thrilled to see Shepherd Ncube being recognized for his outstanding contributions to the community. His bravery and dedication to curbing livestock theft in Matebeleland region are truly commendable. This award is well-deserved, and I hope it serves as an inspiration to others to follow in his footsteps.”
Local cattle trader Jairos Mahlangu of Cattle Mall, Southern Livestock, voiced strong support for Ncube’s actions and called for stricter legal measures against cattle rustlers. “Cattle rustling is not just a crime against property, but also against the livelihoods of our people. I urge the judiciary to exclude cattle rustlers from bail and amnesty. Let us send a clear message that we will not tolerate this criminal activity in our society.”
The stolen cattle, belonging to farmer Zenzo Luphahla from Hope Fountain, were successfully recovered thanks to Ncube’s efforts. Luphahla expressed profound gratitude for the return of his livestock and emphasized the ongoing issue of cattle theft in the region.
Ncube’s actions and the subsequent recovery of the stolen cattle illustrate the significant impact of neighborhood watch committees in safeguarding communities. His story serves as a powerful testament to the effectiveness of local vigilance and the collective effort required to combat crime effectively.
