Meikles Weighs Exit from Remaining Hospitality Operations

Jonathan Sibanda

HARARE – Meikles Limited has announced that it is engaged in discussions over the potential disposal of its remaining interest in hospitality operations, a move that could mark a major strategic shift for one of Zimbabwe’s most established corporate groups.

In a cautionary statement issued on 2 June 2026, the company advised shareholders and the investing public that negotiations are underway and that the proposed transaction may qualify as a Category 1 transaction under Section 253 of Statutory Instrument 134 of 2019.

If the transaction proceeds, Meikles said shareholders will be required to approve the disposal at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to be convened in due course.

“The Directors of Meikles Limited wish to advise shareholders and the investing public that the Company is currently engaged in discussions relating to the potential disposal of its remaining interest in hospitality operations,” the company said in the statement.

Meikles warned that, if concluded, the transaction could have a material effect on the value of its shares.

The company has therefore advised shareholders and investors to exercise caution when dealing in its shares until a full announcement is made.

The cautionary statement does not identify the specific hospitality assets involved in the proposed disposal.

The development follows significant changes to Meikles Limited’s hospitality portfolio in recent years. In 2020, the group sold its stake in Meikles Hotel in Harare, ending its direct ownership of one of Zimbabwe’s most iconic hospitality properties. The hotel was subsequently rebranded as Hyatt Regency Harare The Meikles under new ownership and management.

For decades, Meikles has maintained a strong presence in Zimbabwe’s tourism and hospitality sector through investments in some of the country’s best-known hotel assets. The latest announcement is therefore expected to attract close attention from investors, tourism industry players and other market stakeholders.

No details have yet been disclosed regarding a potential buyer, the value of the transaction or a timeline for completion.
Meikles said a comprehensive announcement will be issued once discussions have been concluded and the necessary approvals obtained.
