Five men have been arrested after police allegedly intercepted a large consignment of dagga valued at ZiG 10.8 million along the Bulawayo–Solusi Road, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.
The suspects have been identified as Gordon Nkowu (58), Nkosiyabo Moyo (57), Shepherd Nkomo (43), Beven Sibanda (40), and Isaiah Moyo (31).
According to police, the five were travelling in a Toyota Hilux Single Cab, registration number DN08VG-GP, towing a trailer bearing registration number KW27Y2-GP when they were stopped during a police operation on the Bulawayo–Solusi Road.
Police allege that the trailer was carrying 360 kilograms of loose dagga with an estimated street value of ZiG 10.8 million.
Investigators believe the consignment was smuggled into Zimbabwe from South Africa through Botswana.
In a statement, the ZRP confirmed the arrests and seizure.
“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Gordon Nkowu (58), Nkosiyabo Moyo (57), Shepherd Nkomo (43), Beven Sibanda (40), and Isaiah Moyo (31). The recovered consignment is among the significant drug seizures recorded in the region in recent months.
The suspects are expected to appear in court facing charges related to the unlawful possession and trafficking of dangerous drugs.
Meanwhile, police have reiterated their commitment to combating drug and substance abuse and urged members of the public to report information relating to drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
The arrests come as law enforcement agencies continue to intensify efforts to curb the smuggling and distribution of illicit drugs through Zimbabwe’s borders.
