In a heartrending turn of events, Bulawayo police are delving into a case of suicide in Lobengula West, where 49-year-old Kholisani Ncube ended his life following an alleged domestic dispute. The incident has left the community grappling with grief and questions about mental health support.

On the evening of January 8, 2025, Ncube and his 44-year-old wife seemed to have retired to bed peacefully. However, tranquility turned to tragedy around 9 PM when Ncube stepped out of the bedroom, only to return with an unusual odor. His wife’s suspicions were soon confirmed when Ncube, struggling to walk, asked for milk. A search around their room revealed a packet of ECT Etrap 50SP pesticide and two purple cups containing a mysterious white substance near the shoe rack.

In a desperate bid to save her husband, Ncube’s wife mixed charcoal with milk, a known home remedy for poisoning, and gave it to him. Despite these efforts, Ncube’s condition did not improve. He requested to be moved outside for fresh air but soon lost consciousness. Emergency services were called, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Investigations revealed that the couple had a contentious argument the previous day, January 7, 2025, over allegations of infidelity. This altercation is believed to have played a significant role in Ncube’s decision to take his own life.

In the wake of this tragedy, both the police and Ncube’s family are advocating for better conflict resolution methods within relationships. Assistant Inspector Msebele from Bulawayo Police’s Press and Public Relations Office stated, “We encourage people to resolve issues amicably and reach out to community leaders or professional counselors for support.”

This incident underscores the urgent need for accessible mental health resources and emphasizes the importance of dialogue in resolving personal conflicts. The community is rallying to support the bereaved family and is pushing for awareness on suicide prevention and relationship counseling.
