FILABUSI — A 33-year-old man from Filabusi has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting two infant sisters aged three years and seven months.

The sentence was imposed by the Gwanda Regional Magistrates’ Court following the man’s conviction on two counts of sexual assault.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the offences occurred on February 24, 2026, at around 11 a.m. in the Chief Maduna area of Filabusi, Matabeleland South Province.

Prosecutors told the court that the children’s mother had left the two girls at their homestead while she worked in nearby fields. While working, she reportedly heard one of the children crying and returned home to investigate.

Upon her return, she allegedly discovered signs that the children’s clothing had been tampered with. The accused was reportedly found at the homestead with his clothing in disarray. Subsequent examinations revealed evidence that both children had been sexually assaulted.

The matter was immediately reported to the police, leading to the suspect’s arrest. The two children were referred to Filabusi District Hospital for medical examination.

The court sentenced the offender to 20 years’ imprisonment on each count. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective prison term of 20 years.

In a statement, the NPAZ said the conviction underscores the justice system’s commitment to protecting children from sexual abuse and exploitation.

Authorities emphasized that crimes against minors are among the most serious offences and continue to attract severe custodial sentences.

The prosecution authority also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of child abuse to law enforcement agencies to help safeguard vulnerable children and ensure offenders are brought to justice.
